Community Art workshops in York- Older PeopleOver a two year period, a huge demand for Arts Projects has led Art and About to work with over 200 older people. The elderly participants enthusiastically get stuck into all variety of projects and their excitement and satisfaction grows at each session. They find the workshops challenging and great for self esteem. It is also great for improving mobility and logic. We work with Age Concern, Care Homes and Day Centres offering a stimulating art projects for all ages and abilities of elderly people. These include people with visual and hearing impairments and mobility problems. The closure of post offices is a real blow for many older people. The difficulties they face with the closures were the focus in this art workshop. Three local Day Centres attended different workshops to produce the thought provoking work. An exhibition was held in a city centre location. The response from the older people was tremendous. | |

Older people using art to look into their own identities... | |

The Arts Council and Allen Lane Foundation invested in a year long project with Art and About and eight groups of local people based around a theme of 'Identity' . Residents of Gale Farm Social Club, each produced a self portrait after spending hours looking at themselves. Adding a favourite phrase or saying to them gave each picture a distinctive twist. The end result was a stunning montage of faces installed in the living area. The older people were delighted with the result.. | |

A stunning sunflower mosaic is the centre point of a community garden in the York village of Bishopthorpe. The sensory garden mosaic was a project worked on by an art group of older people from local community centre Vernon House. Under the watchful eye of Art and About community artists, the older people were delighted with the result. | |
